Days 42-44: Great Falls of CeaseFire! (Montana, 5)

With snark, Jason says, “Aw, you’re leaving before our president gets here!” Say what?! I have to stop myself from hugging him.

Day 40: #RanchLifeMythos (Montana, 3)

Day 40: #RanchLifeMythos (Montana, 3)

From the second I hop off Whitey and onto the 4-wheel ATV, I become the purest version of myself. Any and all sticks up my butt are dislodged.

Day 39: Winning Along the Windy Road to Winnett (Montana, 2)

Day 39: Winning Along the Windy Road to Winnett (Montana, 2)

Wind crashes my mood. Doesn’t matter if I start the day as Mister Pollyanna, the lamely-handled loner superhero with an infinite quarry of positive attitude as his superpower!

Days 36-38: Online ‘Hookup’ Gone Awry, In A Storm I Almost Die (Montana, 1)

Never been to Montana. When I was a kid, it was my ‘favorite’ state. For a while. I was a rather capricious child.

Days 33-35: Teddy R’s Badass Badlands & Buttes, and a Monk Gets Getzoff (North Dakota)

“Hello, butte-iful!” I am giddy. “I’m in fucking North Dakota!” How crazy is this?

Days 31 & 32: TheRealBonk, I’mNotGerman, ManCaved (S-Dak, 3)

Refreshed! Enlivened! Abloom with openness and curiosity! Dying to move on! That’s how three nights at the Econo Lodge and two 8-hour days toiling away at the Rawlins Municipal Library in Pierre, S-Dak affect you.

Days 27-30: Buddies! City Life Musings! (S-Dak, 2)

Days 27-30: Buddies! City Life Musings! (S-Dak, 2)

No more rabbit-hole pop-philosophizing – let’s get down to the (wet) business of riding in the not-exactly-raining rain!

Days 24-26: Let’s Talk About the Buffalo in the Room (South Dakota, 1)

Days 24-26: Let’s Talk About the Buffalo in the Room (South Dakota, 1)

I have a cursory late-20th-century public-school skim-over knowledge of the Lewis & Clark expedition. Pretty much Schoolhouse Rock’s “Elbow Room.”

Check out my new post (link in bio). Getting back to old-skool HBC and reportage from the road in 2018. It’s been 1,619 days since I pedaled over the state line from Montana to Idaho. Let’s celebrate that long-ago milestone. Witness my ignorance regarding bike tire treads! Take a stoned-ass trip back to Santa Cruz 1993 for my first and only bro-infused mountain biking adventure! Scream with me at the majestic coniferousness of northern Idaho’s Bitterroot Mountains! And stay tuned for more.
Check out my most recent #handlebarconfessional essay (link in bio) where I attempt to explain where I am with the project. Haven’t posted since I dipped Whitey Jackson’s wheels in the Atlantic in St. Augustine, Florida, last November. Haven’t posted on my website either–I didn’t want to write from the road (besides the maximum character count on here), as I had during previous rides. It’s WORK.
Day 45 FINALE: Gainesville to St. Augustine, FL
Day 44: Live Oak to Gainesville, FL Penultimate day. And what do I have to show for it? Nada. all 5 pics I snapped today are in the video. I stopped to smell 0 flowers but I did smell dogwood trees. Speaking of dogs, add one of those—and a fox !—to the death-menagerie march of annihilation by auto. And a cyclist whose white cross was at the roadside marking his passing. And a cat from the other day whose death mask I fear I’ll never unsee. I feel a bit guilty for sharing this stuff but we keep it real at HBC. I mean if half the people I spoke to didn’t eerily warn me of the imminent danger Im in CONSTANTLY with stricken visages when I tell them what I’m up to, I might not be thinking of my own death CONSTANTLY. Oh and if I hadn’t been hit in Phoenix…but whatever!
